First Aid for Mental Health

We now have a course discount available when booking Outdoor First Aid, Safeguarding and First Aid for Mental Health. All three courses must be completed within 2 months to qualify for this discount. Separately, this would be £300; if combined, it will be £240.

Each year, approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health condition, and at least 1 in 6 employees experience common mental health problems in the workplace. Research has shown that work is the biggest cause of stress, which can stop people from performing at their best. Mental health conditions are often hidden due to stigma and fear of discrimination, and research has shown that a culture of fear and silence around mental health is costly to employers. The HSE guidance ‘First aid needs assessment’ refers to mental health in the workplace.

Our First Aid for Mental Health courses are delivered by Rhys Green, MA, PGCE. Rhys was one of the first providers of the Ofqual-regulated courses in Wales, once introduced, and has worked with the awarding body to make this course more accessible through virtual learning. The virtual learning process allows for more time to reflect and absorb the information through varied approaches, giving you time and space to reflect and gain understanding.

First Aid for Mental Health is an important area of learning and understanding for all outdoor professionals. If you take people outdoors and out of their comfort zone, you will create stress and anxiety to some extent. These courses will assist you in understanding what stress and anxiety are, along with better strategies for managing your mental health.

Some of the topics discussed include:

  • Knowing what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of a First Aider for mental health
  • Knowing how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition
  • Knowing how to recognise and manage stress
  • Knowing how to recognise a range of mental health conditions
  • Understanding the impact of substance abuse on mental health
  • Understanding the first aid action plan for mental health and being able to put it in place
  • Knowing how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace

If working in a forest school, there is potential for many new social interactions and experiences for developing minds.

When assisting with D of E programmes, we have overnight experiences and are away from home in new situations

As experienced activity coordinators or providers, we take people out of their comfort zone.

Each of these requires appropriate knowledge of Mental Health for participants to achieve their potential.

First Aid for Mental Health or First Aid for Youth Mental Health

When the course is run virtually. I have now designed a series of more interactive virtual learning experiences. These are optional and total 4-6 hours, depending on the contributions of those in the course. Equally, a lot of this information will be on my YouTube channel, in videos edited down but free for more people to watch. I will send out a book to assist your learning. I will email a distance learning pack along with additional learning resources. The assessment process is approximately 45 minutes long and will be conducted via a 1:1 video call. I will be assessing your understanding. This is not an assessment of textbook answers

The face-to-face day will focus on Personal Wellbeing, Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and the 5 ways to wellbeing, and we will go through some mindful activities, all in an outdoor setting. These 6-hour qualifications provide learners with the knowledge to recognise a range of mental health conditions, to start a supportive conversation, and to signpost a person to appropriate professional help. Learners will know how to recognise and manage stress. Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions, as this can only be done by healthcare professionals, but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where to get help.
